How Lamar County schools are paid for and who decides

A fast-growing district in the middle of a large bond-funded building program

Lamar County School District runs the public schools in Lamar County, Mississippi, outside Purvis, Sumrall, Oak Grove and Lumberton. Most operating money comes from the state, with about a third from local property taxes collected by the county. Five board members elected by district (A to E) set the budget and policy and hire Superintendent Dr. Wesley Quick, who started July 1, 2025.

Operating budget

About $137 million in 2026-27 revenue: 32% local, 52% state, 8% federal.

Bond program

Voter-approved bonds pay for new Purvis and Sumrall high schools (an $86.5 million contract) and a new Oak Grove middle school. The last $17.59 million in bonds was sold in 2026.

Tax levy

Each August the board sends its tax requests to the county governments, which collect the money.

Elected board

Members are elected by district; Jared Slade won the District C seat in a December 2025 runoff.

District staff said in January 2026 that the district does not need to borrow for cash flow, and the 2026 bonds sold at a lower interest cost than the 2025 bonds.
