State audit says Levittown over-budgeted and built up surplus
What happened
The New York State Comptroller's July 2026 audit says the board budgeted $127.1 million more spending than it used over five years (2020-21 to 2024-25). It says $64.9 million of savings and reserves were put into budgets without being needed and that $19.4 million of reserve activity was not approved by the board.
Why it matters to families
Budgeting too high can lead to higher property taxes than needed. The audit also says reserve use was not clear to taxpayers. The district says the audit found no fraud or theft, that surpluses have shrunk, and it plans fixes by June 30, 2027.
The evidence
The audit report (2026M-13) lists the figures and seven recommendations. The district's corrective action plan and community letter agree with the findings and describe changes already made in the 2026-27 budget, including cutting appropriated fund balance to $7.9 million.
