Board to vote on four new property tax exemptions on Oct. 28

Financial

What happened

On October 28, 2026 the board will hold a public hearing on four exemptions to start with the 2027 assessment roll (2027-28 school tax): 100% for fully disabled veterans, up to 50% for spouses of police officers killed in the line of duty, up to 50% for spouses of volunteer firefighters or ambulance workers killed in the line of duty, and a senior exemption raised to as much as 65% for incomes under $47,000.

Why it matters to families

These exemptions lower school tax bills for qualifying homeowners. The cost is spread across other taxpayers. The district must opt in by January 4, 2027 for the change to apply in 2027-28, and Nassau County decides who qualifies.

The evidence

The district's public notice lists the four resolutions. An October 14 lawyer's presentation explains each exemption, that county and the Town of Hempstead already adopted them, and the January 4, 2027 deadline. The proposal is under consideration, not decided.
