Board approves new student phone rules: no phones all day in PreK-8

Day-to-day

What happened

On April 20 the board approved a revised policy JICJ on student cell phones and personal devices. As posted in the packet, students in grades PreK-8 may not use phones, earbuds, tablets and similar devices during the whole school day, including lunch and recess, and must keep them turned off in designated areas. In grades 9-12 devices are barred during class but allowed in passing time and lunch, though use is discouraged. Principals can add campus rules.

Why it matters to families

This changes the daily routine for every student and parent, including how families reach students during the school day.

The evidence

The April 20 minutes list JICJ among the policies approved. The packet text is a draft-edits version labeled 4.20.2026, and the earlier May 2025 version was not compared, so what changed is not confirmed.
