Elementary enrollment keeps shrinking; district total is 5,431

What happened

A Sept. 15, 2026 report shows 2026-27 enrollment fell at Central (down 3.5%), Chatsworth (down 1.7%), Mamaroneck Avenue (down 2.4%) and Hommocks Middle (down 3.0%). Murray Avenue grew 1.7% and the high school fell 1.4%. The district total is 5,431. The report says fewer kindergartners are expected because of lower birth rates in 2020 and 2021.

Why it matters to families

Fewer students can mean fewer classes, changes in staffing and, over time, questions about how many school buildings are needed. Class sections at Mamaroneck Avenue School were projected to fall from 29 to 27.

The evidence

The enrollment update lists enrollment by school for 2025-26 and 2026-27 and says elementary schools continue to contract. The March 24, 2026 budget presentation shows the class section projections. No record in the collected files proposes closing a school.
