District overview
Mamaroneck Union Free School District
How the Mamaroneck schools are funded, governed and what is being built.
How are the Mamaroneck schools paid for?
The 2026-27 budget is $176,560,406. About $153.1 million of it (87%) comes from the local property tax levy. The rest, about $23.4 million, comes from state aid and other revenue. Voters in the district approve the budget each May, and the levy is limited by a New York state tax cap. The district says the 2026-27 levy increase of 3.07% is under that cap.
Voters decide the budget
On May 19, 2026 voters passed the budget 859 to 167. The next vote is the annual meeting on May 18, 2027, according to the board's 2026-27 calendar.
People are most of the cost
The superintendent's budget presentation says salaries and benefits are almost 80% of spending.
Building work is paid from reserves and a bond
Voters approved a bond in 2024 for repairs and upgrades, and on May 19, 2026 approved spending $9 million from a capital reserve fund set up in 2025. The district says it can set aside up to $20 million over 15 years for facilities.
Enrollment is shrinking in the elementary schools
Total enrollment is about 5,431 in 2026-27. Three of four elementary schools lost students this year, and the district expects smaller kindergarten classes because of lower birth rates in 2020 and 2021.
A growing budget is not the same as a growing school. Spending is rising 4.36% while elementary enrollment falls, and the posted records do not break out how much of the increase is special education, salaries or building costs.
Where the district stands

Six schools: four K-5 elementary schools, Hommocks Middle School (1,280) and Mamaroneck High School (1,749).
Calculated: $176,560,406 divided by 5,431 students. It includes costs such as debt, transportation and benefits, so it is not classroom spending per student.
