Cell phones not allowed during the school day

Day-to-day

What happened

The 2026-27 handbooks say students may not use cell phones during school hours. At the high school, phones go in a set storage spot during class. Breaking the rule starts with a warning. Next the phone goes to the office in a sealed envelope. After that a parent must pick it up, and the student can get detention or in-school suspension. Students may use phones for health needs or when an IEP or 504 plan allows it.

Why it matters to families

This changes the school day for every student and tells families what happens if a phone comes out.

The evidence

The 2026-27 Meigs High School handbook's personal communication device section says phone use during school hours is 'NOT PERMITTED' and lists the steps for each offense. The board approved the handbooks on August 12, 2026.
