Who makes district decisions?

Elected School Committee

Needham Public Schools is governed by a seven-member, townwide elected School Committee. The committee sets policy, adopts the school budget request, oversees the superintendent, and advances major capital projects for action by other town bodies and voters.

Members serve staggered terms and elect their chair and vice chair annually.

Town appropriation

The School Committee adopts a request, while Town Meeting appropriates operating and capital funding.

State partnership

The Massachusetts School Building Authority can reimburse eligible portions of major school construction.

Major projects

Pollard Middle School replacement

Schematic design submitted; local funding votes scheduled

The plan would reunify grades 6-8 in a new 1,335-student building on the existing Pollard site, built in two phases while school remains in session. The June 2026 estimate reduced the total project budget from $336 million to $325.4 million. The design includes a 750-seat auditorium, about 260 on-site parking spaces, and a geothermal system beneath Warner Field.

Next: A two-thirds Town Meeting vote on October 19, followed by a simple-majority debt-exclusion vote on November 3. If approved, design and bidding are scheduled for March 2027 through March 2028, with the first phase opening in 2030 and completion expected in 2031.

Funding

Town borrowing plus an MSBA grant of up to about $79 million. The state's 42.74% reimbursement rate applies only to approved eligible costs—about $185 million of the project—not to the full $325.4 million budget.

Official project materials estimate geothermal heating and cooling could save $4 million to $6 million over 25 years compared with electric and gas alternatives. Costs above the MSBA grant remain the town's responsibility.
