Newton Public Schools entered the FY27 budget cycle under mounting financial pressure. In February, the district projected a $621,000 deficit for FY26 and imposed an essential-only purchasing and hiring freeze expected to save $1 million to $2 million, signaling a tight-lean approach heading into the next budget year.

Shortly after, the committee unanimously approved a package of FY27 fee increases across transportation, athletics, arts, early-morning programs, building use, music, and early-childhood services, projected to raise about $447,000. These targeted revenue measures were paired with spending restraint rather than replacing deeper structural decisions.

The cycle culminated in April with unanimous approval of Path B, a $314.5 million FY27 budget that dedicates $1 million to middle-school math pathways and MTSS while calling for even deeper structural reductions elsewhere. Taken together, the three actions show a district closing a mid-year gap, adding modest fee-based revenue, and ultimately balancing its budget with a trade-off between prioritized academic investment and larger cuts.
