Newton Public Schools — Curriculum

The first shift came in November 2025, when the committee approved revised graduation competency requirements. Under the new policy, students must complete required coursework and demonstrate mastery, with a U.S. History requirement taking effect beginning with the Class of 2027.

Six months later, in May 2026, the committee focused on the district's core classroom curriculum. It approved Amplify Desmos for mathematics in grades K-8 and directed development of a custom, unified high-school math curriculum. On the same day, it also approved the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) phonics program to replace Fundations in kindergarten through grade 2.

Taken together, the adoptions mark a coordinated refresh of foundational learning across the district: new reading instruction in the early grades, a new math program spanning elementary and middle school, and updated expectations for what students must demonstrate before earning a diploma. Families with children in the affected grades may want to watch for how these programs roll out in classrooms.
