Schools adopt a step-by-step behavioral-health referral process

Northern Humboldt Union High School District · Jun 16, 2026

Day-to-day

What happened

The board adopted one districtwide process for identifying behavioral-health concerns, notifying families, triaging need, connecting students with services, and checking back afterward.

Why it matters to families

Students should have a clearer path to help instead of relying on different informal practices at each school. The policy gives extra attention to foster youth, students experiencing homelessness, students with disabilities, LGBTQ+ students, and substance-use concerns.

The evidence

The June policy requires annual needs reviews, quarterly site checks of referral volume and response times, defined crisis and non-crisis pathways, parent notification, service handoffs, follow-up checks, and annual reporting on measures such as time to first contact and ten-day follow-up completion.
