Proposed all-day phone and smartwatch ban for every grade

Day-to-day

What happened

A draft policy would ban students in Pre-K through grade 8 from using or carrying phones, smartwatches, and other connected devices from the first bell to dismissal. Devices would have to be turned off and stored. The committee accepted a first reading in June 2026, and the third reading is set for October 28, 2026.

Why it matters to families

Students could not have a phone or smartwatch on them at any time during the school day, including lunch and recess. Families would need to reach children through the school office. Breaking the rule could mean the device is taken for the day, and repeat violations could lead to a parent meeting or discipline.

The evidence

Draft policy JICJ, linked from the October 28, 2026 agenda, sets out the bell-to-bell ban, the exceptions (health plans, IEP/504, English learner support, emergencies), and the consequences. Its 'Adopted' line is blank. June 9, 2026 minutes record a 3-0 vote accepting the first reading.
