New school design came in $6 to $7 million over budget, then was cut back

What happened
At the March 18, 2026 meeting the project team said early cost estimates for the new school were about $6 to $7 million too high. Changes brought the design back within budget, including moving staff parking and shrinking the auxiliary gym. Two board members said they were frustrated by the compromises.
Why it matters to families
The state grant and local bond cap what can be built, so cuts to gym and restroom space affect how students and the public will use the building.
The evidence
The March 18, 2026 minutes record the estimate gap, the changes (auxiliary gym reduced, basketball court no longer full size, staff parking moved) and board comments. A BEST representative was reported as satisfied with the design.
