What happened

After months of discussion, trustees voted 4–1 to purchase 23 OpenGate/CEIA systems and support them with five eight-hour campus supervisors and 15 one-hour clerical assignments. Staff estimated about $638,000 for equipment, approximately $1.138 million initially with staffing, and up to $500,000 annually for staffing.

Why it matters to families

Daily entry screening could change student arrival routines and create a recurring operating expense. Approval is not proof the systems are deployed: funding adjustments, training and labor-impact negotiations remained necessary.

The evidence

The final motion explicitly approved the purchase and complete staffing proposal. Staff clarified that existing hand-held wands were used for reasonable-suspicion searches, rather than universal entry screening. Trustees debated survey opposition among students, delays, staffing needs and budget tradeoffs before the 4–1 vote.
