What happened

Trustees voted 5–0 to defer acceptance of CMI facilities funding and a loan for the required 50% local match until November. The September 9 presentation described approximately $55.9 million currently available for a scaled project, split between state grant and local financing, with the district as borrower. Staff estimated a $27.95 million local loan and about $1.4 million annually over 30 years.

Why it matters to families

The financing could improve the existing CMI campus but create a long-term district obligation. CMI repayments were anticipated; the district would retain exposure if the charter closed and no replacement charter assumed the facility.

The evidence

Trustees asked for legal and consultant review before proceeding. The teachers’ association opposed this loan arrangement and explicitly did not endorse or oppose Measure AA. The full $74.5 million application was not all available funding; no loan acceptance was approved at the September meetings.
