District news
District says only Schreiber students can use an approved AI chatbot; $3.7 million device refresh planned
What happened
A June 16, 2026 Board presentation says teachers use AI tools such as Google Gemini and MagicSchool, students in elementary and middle school do not have AI chatbots, and Schreiber students have a privacy-compliant version of Gemini. Misuse of AI was added to the Code of Character, Culture, and Conduct. The district also plans a net $3.7 million refresh of Chromebooks and teacher devices in the 2026-27 budget cycle, for use in September 2027. This is a status report, not a new board AI policy.
Why it matters to families
Parents can see who may use AI at school and where misuse is covered. The device refresh sets how much laptop time and spending the district expects.
The evidence
Slides on 'Artificial Intelligence' list training for teachers, a parent panel, access rules by grade, and the Code update. The 'Hardware Refresh Update' slide gives about $3.7 million for Grades 2-12 Chromebooks, cases, teacher devices, printers and 2nd-grade charging carts, and says PreK iPads are being removed.
