State plans to end the Regents-exam requirement for a diploma, starting with the Class of 2028

Curriculum

What happened

On September 17, 2026 the Superintendent told the Board that the state Board of Regents approved a plan to end the rule that students must pass Regents exams to earn a diploma, and to move to one diploma with seals. It would first affect the Class of 2028, today's juniors. The state is not final: rules are expected in February with a 60-day comment period and final action in June 2027.

Why it matters to families

Course choices, grading bonuses for Regents scores, and college transcripts could change for current juniors and younger students. The district is waiting for state details.

The evidence

Superintendent's report in the September 17, 2026 auto-captioned video transcript, repeated on October 8, 2026: Regents exams stay available, a universal state transcript is planned, and new state assessments are being developed.
