How is Primero School District paid for?
Primero RE-2 is a small rural district in Weston, Las Animas County, Colorado, with about 250 students in one PK-12 campus (federal data). Colorado funds districts per student through a formula that combines local property tax and state aid. The board certified its mill levy on December 8, 2025 for taxes collected in 2026. A voter-approved bond pays for employee townhomes used to recruit teachers. A seven-member board of education sets the budget and hires the superintendent, Jeanine Duran.
Mill levy
Certified by board vote on December 8, 2025 for property tax year 2025.
Enrollment
In May 2026 the superintendent reported statewide enrollment at a decade low and cited online schools; the board moved the kindergarten cutoff to June 1 to help.
Employee housing
Bond-funded townhomes were meant to attract teachers; in June 2026 the board decided who may live there.
Technology
A new internet addition from SECOM was signed off by the state in September 2026.
The collected minutes do not give total budget figures, so spending per student is not established here.
