Board approved 2026-27 job cuts but pulled nurse and counselor posts off the list

Financial

What happened

At a special meeting on February 12, 2026 the board adopted Resolution No. 3555, eliminating certificated positions for 2026-27, on a 4-0 vote and only after amending it. The amendment took a set of student-support jobs off the cut list for a later decision: 4.5 full-time-equivalent school nurses, 7.8 counselors, 6.0 clinician psychologist/social workers, 3.5 school social workers, 1.4 school psychologists, a community school specialist and a counselor. A separate resolution to lay off preschool staff was tabled.

Why it matters to families

These are the adults students see when they are sick, struggling or applying to college, so which posts survive the list changes what help is available at school next year. The jobs were only set aside for further discussion, not saved, and district papers tie the reductions to falling enrollment and the budget. State law required the board to act before the March 15 notice deadline, which is why the vote happened at a special meeting.

The evidence

The approved minutes of the February 12, 2026 special meeting, carried in the April 16, 2026 agenda packet, record the reconsideration and the 4-0 vote to approve Resolution No. 3555 as amended, and list the exact full-time-equivalent positions pulled from the vacant and active staffing lists. The minutes also record Resolution No. 3560 on preschool layoffs being tabled.
