District news
District reports an $82 million hole this year and a $212 million ongoing gap
What happened
At the August 20, 2026 meeting, district leaders gave the first monthly update on the Fiscal Sustainability Plan. They reported an immediate general fund deficit of about $82.2 million and an ongoing structural deficit of $212 million. The plan targets $158.6 million in savings; $36.7 million has been found so far, and $31.1 million of that is a one-time state block grant that staff said does not fix the ongoing gap. Cash-flow projections were extended from June 2026 to April 2027.
Why it matters to families
A structural deficit is the gap that comes back every year, so one-time money only buys time. Staff described the extra runway as the room needed to make permanent changes and keep local control, which is the district's way of saying the alternative is a state takeover of budget decisions. Cuts of this size reach class sizes, staffing and school services.
