State audit finds weak controls over school credit cards

High-risk

What happened

The State Comptroller reviewed 2,878 district credit-card purchases ($196,039) from July 2022 to October 2023. It found missing receipts, purchases by unauthorized users, unnecessary meal purchases, poor fuel-card oversight, and claims paid before audit. It made 16 recommendations. District officials generally disagreed.

Why it matters to families

It is about how public money was watched. The board must send a corrective action plan to the state within 90 days. The district says fuel and credit cards were changed about three years ago.

The evidence

The report (2025M-41, dated September 2026) lists the counts above. The Sept. 16 and Oct. 14 meetings show the board acknowledging the audit and a corrective plan being drafted.
