Voters reject proposed school-tax cap, leaving district without new limit

What happened
Sunapee voters rejected the proposed school-tax cap, so it will not constrain the district’s budgets. The measure received less than 50% support among roughly 1,900 voters, below the 60% needed to pass; officials said it could return to the ballot in two years.
Why it matters to families
The district can continue preparing budgets without the proposed cap, which the superintendent had warned could force larger classes or fewer electives if adopted.
The evidence
At the November 4 meeting, the superintendent said about 1,900 people voted, the measure received less than 50% support, and thanked the community for not putting a cap in place. He said voters could consider it again in two years. The previously reported ballot question required 60% approval to pass.
