Employee benefit costs coming in "much higher" than budgeted
What happened
At the Sep 23, 2026 work session the finance chief said benefits (health and similar costs) were running much higher than budgeted. In Nov 2025 and Apr 2026 leaders also said medical costs were rising and would keep rising for two years.
Why it matters to families
Rising benefit costs can squeeze money for classrooms and force use of savings.
The evidence
The Sep 23, 2026 minutes note the benefits remark. Earlier minutes and the Feb 11, 2026 budget deck show benefits up $8.9 million (8.0%) in the 2026-27 plan.
