School tax rate set to drop to 12 mills, but many bills may still rise

Financial

What happened

The board proposed cutting the school property tax rate from 13.987 mills to 12 mills, with a final vote set for October 22, 2026. Property values went up a lot, so the district still had to post a notice calling it a 5.72% tax increase.

Why it matters to families

Families who own homes may still pay more school tax, even with a lower rate. The notice says a $100,000 home would pay about $24.66 more than at the rollback rate. The district says keeping 12 mills lets it get state building money, like about $1.2 million it got for new HVAC.

The evidence

The district's 'Proposes Lower Millage Rate' notice explains the cut from 13.987 to 12 mills and why a tax-increase notice is still required. The Notice of Property Tax Increase lists hearings on October 15 and 22, 2026. The October 22 called-meeting agenda lists approval of the millage rate.
