How Treutlen County Schools is paid for

Mostly state-funded, now drawing down savings

Treutlen County Schools runs one campus in Soperton with Treutlen Elementary School (pre-K to 5) and Treutlen Middle/High School (6 to 12), about 980 students. Most of its money comes from Georgia's school funding formula; local property tax adds about $2.9 million a year. A five-member elected board, one member per district, meets monthly and posts agendas but not minutes.

State money is the base

State sources are $11.1 million of the $14.7 million general fund revenue in the 2026-27 budget.

Spending more than income

The 2026-27 budget spends $16.6 million, using $1.9 million of savings; savings fall from $6.45 million to $4.52 million.

Lower tax rate, higher values

The board proposed cutting the rate from 13.987 to 12 mills in 2026 while property values rose about 45%.

12 mills unlocks state building money

The district says holding at 12 mills keeps it eligible for Georgia's Low-Wealth Capital Outlay program, which paid about $1.2 million toward HVAC.

Even after the planned draw, the budget projects about $4.5 million in general fund savings, roughly a quarter of a year's spending.
