Who is running Wyoming County Schools right now?
Wyoming County Schools is a rural southern West Virginia district of about 3,450 students in 14 schools, run by a five-member elected Board of Education. In August 2026 the State Board of Education declared a state of emergency after a review found governance, personnel and fiscal problems. The district now works under a state-mandated corrective action plan, and the state can intervene if it does not improve. Superintendent John Henry resigned effective October 1, 2026, and former superintendent Deirdre Cline is serving as interim.
State oversight
State of emergency declared August 12, 2026; the corrective action plan is in place.
Leadership
Interim Superintendent Deirdre Cline since October 1, 2026; the board is setting the process for a permanent hire.
Enrollment
Down 455 students from 2022 to 2026, according to WVDE.
Money
About 70 positions over the state formula; unrestricted fund balance down from about $9M to about $4-5M; the excess levy brings in about $8.8M a year.
WVDE noted that the county's voter-approved excess levy is far larger than most and keeps it solvent. Bond-funded construction, including a new school, continued through the year.
