State declares Wyoming County Schools in a state of emergency

High-risk

What happened

The West Virginia Board of Education put Wyoming County Schools under a state of emergency on August 12, 2026, after a special circumstance review by the Department of Education's Office of Accountability. On October 15 a WVDE associate superintendent briefed the board. The review found problems with governance and transparency, including meeting agendas and recordings and records, as well as leadership, personnel practices, federal program administration and fiscal management. The district must follow a state-mandated corrective action plan. If it cannot show improvement, the state can extend the emergency or intervene.

Why it matters to families

Under full state intervention, the state board takes over most of the local board's powers. The corrective action plan, first issued around September 11, sets the work the board and the new superintendent will be judged on. The interim superintendent said publicly on October 5 that the plan should be shared with the public.
