Board denies California Learning Academy charter petition
What happened
On July 28, 2026 the board voted to deny a petition to open the California Learning Academy (CALA) charter school in the district. Staff recommended denial, citing the petitioners' record of very low academic results, fiscal mismanagement and misuse of public funds, missing required signatures, and a petition lacking detail about the program.

Families will not have this charter option unless the petitioners win an appeal to the county or state.
