Can a 10-mill county system pay for new schools?

About 8,450 students; facility pressure in Marbury and Pine Level; Prattville is weighing its own city system

Autauga County Schools runs schools in Prattville, Marbury, Pine Level and Billingsley, plus the Autauga Virtual Academy and a technology center. A five-member elected board, each member from a single district and serving six-year terms, sets policy; Superintendent Lyman Woodfin runs the district. Alabama pays districts mainly by enrollment, and local property tax here is at the state minimum of 10 mills, which limits how much the district can borrow. A proposed local property tax increase failed at the polls, according to the superintendent.

Fewer students funded

State funding for FY2027 is based on 8,457.95 students, down 89.6 from the year before and down from about 9,189 in 2019.

Possible Prattville city system

The superintendent said about 700 students living outside Prattville city limits attend Prattville schools and could move to county schools in Marbury and Pine Level if the city splits off.

Large building projects

$9.6 million in metal athletic and storage buildings and a pending $4.2 million property purchase in Pine Level.

Stronger reserves

Higher interest earnings (about $2 million a year, up from $200,000) paid for $800 employee bonuses in 2025 and a reserve of about 7 months.

No agreement on a city split exists, and the Pine Level purchase still needs a final board vote.
