Who runs Cañon City Schools and how is it funded?

Mid-sized rural district with flat funding, a voter-approved bond just finished, and an override on the November 2026 ballot

Cañon City Schools (Fremont Re-1) serves about 3,000 students in Cañon City, Colorado. The state pays most of the budget based on how many students attend, and local property taxes add to it, including a bond that paid for building projects and a mill levy override that pays for operating costs. A five-member elected board meets on the second and fourth Mondays at 5:30 p.m., usually with a work session first, and hires Superintendent Adam Hartman. After a board member resigned in September 2026 the board appointed Kenny Haferkamp to the open seat until the November 2027 election.

Flat money

The finance chief told the board in May 2026 that funding would stay about $35.5 million because falling enrollment cancels out a higher per-pupil rate.

Override vote

On Nov. 3, 2026 voters were asked to extend a mill levy override; the result was not found.

Bond work done

The district celebrated on Aug. 28, 2026 the end of the last project paid for by the 2023 bond: the high school and stadium.

Attendance

2025-26 attendance rose to 93.4% and chronic absenteeism fell to 19.5%, per the superintendent.

The records show spending above revenue and reserves under the district's targets, but they also show a finished bond program, a positive superintendent evaluation and better attendance.
