How does a tiny, remote district pay for its schools?

A state-formula district of about 220 students, planning a leadership change and its next building project

Daggett School District covers all of Daggett County in far northeastern Utah, around Flaming Gorge. It runs Manila Elementary, Manila Jr./Sr. High in Manila, and Flaming Gorge Elementary in Dutch John, with about 220 students. Like other Utah districts, most of its money follows Utah's school funding formula, plus local property tax. A five-member elected Board of Education sets the budget and policy and hires the superintendent. The board meets on the second Tuesday of most months, and posts agendas, minutes and audio on Utah's Public Notice Website.

Four-day week

Schools run four days a week. In March 2026 the state granted a four-year waiver to keep that schedule.

Spending runs about $590,000 a month

Monthly bill lists (warrants) approved in 2026 ranged from about $482,000 to $664,000.

No tax-rate hearing this year

In May 2026 the board said it missed the deadline for Utah's Truth in Taxation process, so it did not go through that process for 2026-27.

Leadership change ahead

The board is planning for the superintendent's retirement and suggested a successor start shadowing him by April 1, 2027.

The board's business is done in public: each meeting has posted minutes and audio, the board accepted its 2024-25 audit in November 2025, and most decisions passed 5-0 after public hearings. None of this shows how well students are learning.
