What happened

On April 8, 2026, the board adopted a new version of Policy 5136. Students may not use cellphones, smartwatches or similar devices on school grounds during instructional time. Basic phones that only make calls are not covered.

Why it matters to families

This changes a daily rule for every student. Exceptions are allowed for medical needs, school-issued devices, teacher-approved lessons, IEP or 504 plans, and emergencies. Students who break the rule face discipline under the Student Code of Conduct. The policy follows a 2026 Michigan law (Public Act 2 of 2026).

The evidence

The district's online policy manual shows Policy 5136 "Revised April 8, 2026" with the full rule. The April 8, 2026 minutes record the board approving the policy updates 6-0.
