What happened

The October 19, 2026 agenda included a resolution to start using the new AB 2555 rules now. These rules decide when English learners are reclassified as fluent. The written English Learner Plan is still being updated.

Why it matters to families

Reclassification decides whether a student keeps getting English learner services. About 5.7% of the school's students are English learners. The resolution says outdated rules should not delay any student's reclassification.

The evidence

Agenda item V.A, Resolution 2026-12, explains that AB 2555 changed reclassification requirements effective September 27, 2026. It directs staff to carry out the changes while the plan is finished and to bring the plan back to the board. Minutes are not yet posted, so the vote outcome is not known.
