District news

K-5 reading program is not on Michigan's recommended list

Curriculum

What happened

Under a state law requirement, the district told families that its K-5 reading curriculum, Wonders by McGraw Hill, is not on the Michigan Department of Education's recommended literacy list. The district says its own review found the program evidence-based and aligned to the science of reading.

Why it matters to families

State law requires this notice because the state says programs not on the list could hurt student outcomes. Families may want to ask how reading progress is tracked.

The evidence

Section 164k(e) notice: 'The district's current K–5 literacy curriculum, Wonders-McGraw Hill, is not included on the… Recommended Literacy Materials List.'
