Garfield Middle School plans intramural winter sports

What happened
The superintendent plans to shift some Garfield Middle School sports from selective teams to intramural play this winter. Basketball and volleyball were named as activities that students cut from limited rosters could still play; the superintendent said the program itself would not come to the board for a vote.
Why it matters to families
Students who do not make competitive teams may gain a way to participate, but the change alters how middle-school sports are offered. The superintendent also described connecting participation with tutoring and attendance expectations.
The evidence
At 1:23:05–1:29:34, the superintendent described the intramural proposal, naming basketball and volleyball, as well as after-school tutoring and chronic-absence conditions. At 2:08:29–2:09:24, he said track might continue and winter was the immediate opportunity. At 2:10:00–2:10:27, a board member said the district had agreed to try the approach; at 2:14:11–2:14:26, the superintendent clarified that the program itself would not come to the board for a vote. This is an administrative plan, not a formally adopted board action.
