State audit finds $55,015 in vendor overpayments

Financial

What happened

A New York State Comptroller audit found Greenburgh Central paid three vendors $55,015 more than contract terms allowed for hazardous-material removal, HVAC work and tree services. The audit examined time-and-materials contracts during July 2022–August 2023, when the district paid $3.8 million to 32 vendors.

Why it matters to families

The audit found that invoices were not consistently checked against contract rates or supported by adequate documentation, leaving public funds vulnerable to overpayment. It recommended stronger contract monitoring and more thorough review of claims before payment.

The evidence

The Comptroller reported $32,800 in hazardous-material abatement overpayments, $21,040 for HVAC and $1,175 for landscaping in its review. The audit tested selected payments and did not project the results to all contracts; it also did not state here whether the overpayments were recovered.
