Hastings High School changes how students can enter advanced courses

What happened
Hastings High School has revised course-placement rules to give students a clearer path into more rigorous classes. Students seeking a course they are not recommended for can now set measurable goals with teachers, while added math and science support and a standalone testing center provide more help once they enroll.
Why it matters to families
The changes reduce reliance on a simple placement override and make access to challenging courses more attainable while adding support for students taking them.
The evidence
At the November 3 meeting, a presentation said that for the 2026–27 school year the high school had added a consulting teacher for upper-level math and science and created a standalone testing center. It also described revised course-override rules requiring measurable student goals and encouraging conversations with teachers about course paths; a public commenter said these changes expand access to rigorous classes. These were described as already in place, not newly voted on at this meeting.
