JPS agreement starts education at intake for students at Henley-Young

What happened
JPS and Hinds County approved an amended agreement for education at Henley-Young Juvenile Justice Center, starting services at intake instead of after 48 hours. It also says isolation cannot deny education unless there is an immediate safety threat, and spells out support for students with disabilities and English learners.
Why it matters to families
Students held for short periods will no longer have to wait two days for educational services, and the agreement sets clearer responsibility for continuing instruction and planning students' return to their home schools.
The evidence
At the October 20 meeting, staff said JPS leads educational compliance, records and federal-program functions while the facility handles custody, security, space and student availability. The amended MOU requires facility notification within 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays), JPS enrollment within three days, and educational services at intake; the board approved the action unanimously.
