Who pays for Lindenhurst schools, and who decides?

Mostly local property taxes, with a state tax cap

Lindenhurst is an ordinary New York school district. An elected, unpaid Board of Education sets the budget, and residents vote on it each May. Property taxes pay for a little over half of the $201.6 million 2026-27 budget, and state aid pays for a little over a third. New York's tax cap limits how fast the tax levy can grow each year.

Budget and levy

The 2026-27 budget is $201,606,607, up from $197,308,708. The tax levy is $116.6 million, up 1.62%, which the district says is exactly at its state cap.

Where the money comes from

Tax levy 57.84%, state aid 37.17%, other revenue 2.54%, reserves 2.20%, fund balance 0.25%.

Who decides

The Board of Education has eight trustees listed, with terms ending in June of 2027, 2028 or 2029, plus the superintendent. Voters decide the budget and board seats each May (May 19, 2026; May 18, 2027).

Big costs

Health insurance rose 9%, transportation rose 5.94% under a five-year bus contract, and out-of-district special education placements are growing.

Staying at the tax cap does not mean spending is flat: the budget still grew 2.18%. The documents do not report the May 2026 budget vote result.
