A small K-12 district gets ready for its first new superintendent in years
Maywood Public Schools serves about 190 students in Frontier County, Nebraska, in one elementary and one junior/senior high on Tiger Drive. A six-member Board of Education, elected at large, meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the high school library. Mark Bejot is superintendent, and Lucas McCain is principal and activities director. The district shares sports teams with Hayes Center and buys many services from Educational Service Units 15 and 16.
Leadership change
In September the board accepted Bejot's retirement. In October it took up the search and set an interview with McCain.
$4.0 million tax request
The board set the 2026-27 property tax request at $4,003,885, after raising its asking authority by 7%.
Building updates
Seven restrooms are being remodeled ($156,471), plus new cafeteria flooring, carpet and security window film.
New rules for students
The board adopted a new cell phone policy, a revised bullying policy, new student fees, and Reveal Math for grades 7-12.
Board votes are almost always unanimous, and the district posts agendas, minutes, superintendent pay notices and annual reports. It does not post its budget document or the policies it has recently revised.
