District news

Old school buildings given to the City of Welch and Town of Kimball

Facilities

What happened

The board voted in January 2026 to convey the closed Welch Elementary School to the City of Welch, which plans a wellness center and agreed to pay legal fees. On August 18, 2026 the board voted 5-0 to convey the closed Kimball Elementary School to the Town of Kimball. The Kimball building needs major roof work (about $600,000 by one estimate).

Why it matters to families

Both schools closed when students moved to the new consolidated Coalfield Elementary. Handing them to local governments avoids demolition costs the district estimated at about $1 million.

The evidence

In the January 8, 2026 recording the board takes up "Approval to convey Welch Elementary School property to the city of Welch." In the August 18 recording, the vote is announced as a "5-0 vote for yes is conveyed to the city of Kimball."
