How is Moriarty-Edgewood paid for?

State formula money for operations; voter-approved bonds and levies for buildings

Moriarty-Edgewood School District serves about 2,300 students in Moriarty, Edgewood and nearby parts of the East Mountains, mostly in Torrance County. Like other New Mexico districts, it gets most operating money from the state formula, called the SEG, which pays per student 'unit'. For 2026-27 that is about $34.4 million. About 95% of operating spending goes to salaries and benefits. Buildings are paid for separately by voter-approved bonds and a capital improvements tax. A five-member elected board sets policy and hires the superintendent.

State formula

The 2026-27 budget uses a unit value of $7,117.10, up $240. Staff said the real increase is smaller than the $1.26 million first projected.

Rising costs

State insurance premiums go up 9% in 2026-27 and 26.27% the next year. The district pays 80% of premiums (about $590,000).

Building money

Voters approved a $20 million bond and kept the capital improvements tax in November 2025, both at the same tax rate.

Board

President Denny Young (since September 2026), Vice President Wendy Burns, Secretary Albert Chavez, Linda Hudson and Jeff Lossing.

Recent audits were clean: the 2024-25 audit had one minor state finding and the federal single audit had none. The district says every school met accreditation criteria this year.
