District news

Advanced middle school math cut back

Curriculum

What happened

The district removed Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade from the middle school High Ability Program. Four parents objected at the August 10 meeting. The superintendent said data show many accelerated students are not mastering grade-level standards, admitted communication fell short, and promised question-and-answer sessions at each middle school. The board did not vote on the change.

Why it matters to families

Students who would have taken high school math early in middle school will follow a different path, which can affect the courses they reach in high school.
