A one-school district spending down its savings
New Simpson Hill District 32 runs one pre-K to 8th grade school in Tunnel Hill, Johnson County, with about 200 students, who go on to Vienna High School. A seven-member elected board meets monthly. The district posts agendas, its budget and its policy manual, but not minutes, so the public record shows what the board planned to discuss rather than what it decided.
Classroom fund runs a deficit
The 2026-27 budget plans $2,944,064 in Educational Fund spending against $2,644,139 in revenue, cutting that fund's balance from $955,550 to $655,625.
Bonds for cash on hand
In late 2025 the board held a hearing on $315,000 in working cash bonds and then took up a resolution for up to $750,000 in general obligation bonds repaid by a property tax.
Working cash fund props up other funds
The budget moves $210,000 from the Working Cash Fund, which starts the year at $1,121,199, into the Transportation Fund.
Talks with a neighbor
In August 2026 the board took up a feasibility study resolution from Vienna Grade School, another district that feeds Vienna High School.
The state budget form says a deficit-reduction plan is not required yet, and total fund balances remain about $2 million at the end of 2026-27 under the plan.
