District news

Weapons detectors used at middle and high schools and events

Day-to-day

What happened

The district uses portable weapons detection systems at its secondary schools. In November and December 2025 administrators said metal detectors would be used at all secondary buildings during parent conferences and at concerts. The district safety plan material in the board's August 25, 2026 packet describes the detectors and student bag searches under policies 5154 and 5154.1.

Why it matters to families

Students and families may go through screening when entering secondary schools and some evening events. The board has put policy 5154.1 on its October 19, 2026 agenda for discussion.

The evidence

The August 25, 2026 meeting packet includes the district safety plan text: it uses weapons detection systems at secondary school buildings, screened by trained security staff under Board Policy 5154.1, and searches under Policy 5154 need reasonable suspicion. The recordings from November 17 and December 8, 2025 record the conference and concert use. The October 19 agenda lists Policy 5154.1 Metal Detector Search Procedures for discussion.
