Raton schools move to a four-day week

Day-to-day

What happened

Raton Public Schools is switching to a four-day school week for 2026-27, most likely Monday through Thursday. The board allowed it on April 30 after a family survey, approved the new calendar 3-2 on May 11, and the superintendent confirmed the change in July.

Why it matters to families

Families need child care and meals on Fridays, and school days get longer. Staff planned a weekend backpack food program, and special education service hours had to be rewritten.

The evidence

The July 16, 2026 minutes record the superintendent saying the district will move to a four-day week. The April 30 special meeting minutes record the 5-0 vote and the survey of 705 families, about 75% strongly in favor.
