District news
Two elementary schools to become STEAM academies
What happened
Staff presented plans to turn Roque Guerra Jr. Elementary and Alto Bonito Elementary into open-enrollment STEAM academies. STEAM means science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The plan also adds reading coaches for grades K-2 and a virtual credit-recovery program.
Why it matters to families
Families anywhere in the district, and possibly outside it, could choose these schools for a STEAM focus.
The evidence
At the June 15, 2026 special meeting, staff presented 10 initiatives for 2026-27, including the two STEAM academies. This was a presentation; the captions do not show a separate vote on it. Evidence comes from the district's auto-generated YouTube captions, which can garble names and numbers.
