District news

Before- and after-school child care at Riley Avenue is ending

Day-to-day

What happened

At the July 1 meeting the superintendent said SCOPE, the outside group that ran the before- and after-school program at Riley Avenue Elementary, could not keep it going because fewer children signed up. Parents said they rely on it for work schedules. The district said it asked other providers but none could take it over then, and it cannot bus children to a day-care center outside the district boundary.

Why it matters to families

Families who need early drop-off or late pickup would have to find care elsewhere. Aquebogue Elementary also had a SCOPE license for 2025-26, but the meeting did not say whether its program continues.

The evidence

Two online comments and the superintendent's replies are in the July 1 recording. The December 10, 2025 board agenda approved a license for SCOPE to run before- and after-school care at Aquebogue and Riley Avenue for 2025-26. The district said it continues to look for options.
