Riverhead adopts a policy protecting the rights of immigrant and non-citizen students
What happened
The board gave final approval to new Policy 0102 on safeguarding the rights of immigrant and non-citizen students. The policy committee said it follows Education Law 3201-b and covers how the district handles immigration-enforcement requests, access to students and school property, and annual written notice that school resource officers, security staff and administrators must acknowledge.
Why it matters to families
It sets rules staff must follow if immigration officials ask for access to students or school buildings. Families raised immigration-enforcement worries at the language-access committee in November 2025.
The evidence
The August 19 policy committee report (read at the September 30 meeting) describes the policy's contents; the September 16 agenda lists second and final reading and the recording shows the motion passed. The policy text itself is on the district's BoardDocs site, which could not be collected.
