District news

Phones banned bell to bell, with growing penalties

Day-to-day

What happened

Students may not use phones or other personal devices on campus during the school day. Devices must be stored the way the district says. In middle and high school, penalties grow with each offense. A first offense means a parent picks up the phone. A sixth offense means 15 days in an alternative school (DAEP). The board kept the rules the same for 2026-27.

Why it matters to families

This changes every student's school day. Repeat offenses can lead to in-school suspension or removal to an alternative program. Exceptions apply for IEP or 504 plans, a doctor's directive and safety needs.

The evidence

The 2025-26 Student Code of Conduct, under 'Possession of Personal Communication Devices', lists separate secondary and elementary penalty ladders. At the July 29, 2026 meeting, the deputy superintendent said the 2026-27 code was unchanged from 2025-26, and the board approved it.
